What the kimchi study actually found
Researchers at the World Institute of Kimchi (a government-funded institute in South Korea) screened lactic acid bacteria from kimchi fermentation for their ability to grab hold of plastic particles. One strain stood out: Leuconostoc mesenteroides CBA3656. Its cell wall structure gave it a biosorption efficiency of up to 57% for nanoplastics, where comparable lactic acid bacteria dropped to around 3%. That gap is what made the result publishable rather than incremental.
They then fed polystyrene nanoplastics to germ-free mice, with and without CBA3656. The mice receiving the bacterium excreted roughly twice as much plastic in their faeces. The study appeared in Bioresource Technology in 2026, and the researchers suggested it could eventually be delivered as a yoghurt or supplement for people with high exposure, such as heavy seafood eaters or those in polluted areas.
Why “more plastic in stool” isn't the same as detox
This is the crucial reading, and most coverage blurs it. More plastic in faeces means more plastic passed through instead of being absorbed. It is evidence of interception at the gut, a genuinely useful thing. It is not evidence that plastic was pulled back out of the bloodstream, arteries, or brain.
Microplastics detected in human blood and arterial plaque crossed the gut lining at some earlier point. A bacterium living in your intestine has no route to them. So the honest framing for any food or supplement in this space is “may lower future absorption,” never “flushes out what you have.”

The sensible way to eat given all this
Nothing here justifies a supplement protocol, but a few of these are worth doing because they're good decisions anyway:
- Eat fermented foods if you enjoy them. Kimchi, yoghurt, and sauerkraut have well-established gut benefits independent of anything plastic-related. The plastic-binding angle is a possible bonus, not the reason.
- Eat enough fiber. Plausible for transit and binding, and unambiguously good for you.
- Be selective with the highest-plastic foods. This is the real lever, see foods with the most microplastics.
- Don't buy binder supplements on this evidence. Charcoal and clay binders also strip nutrients and can interfere with medication.
- Fix the packaging, not just the plate. How your food is stored, heated, and packaged usually matters more than which vegetable you chose.
