What these supplements actually are
A postbiotic is not a probiotic. Probiotics are live bacteria intended to colonise your gut. A postbiotic is heat-killed bacterial cells (or their fragments), which means nothing has to survive stomach acid or take up residence to work. In this case that's the whole point: the useful property isn't metabolic activity, it's the physical surface of the dead cell wall.
The proposed mechanism is biosorption, a fancy word for sticking. The rough, charged outer wall of these bacteria attracts and holds plastic particles, forming clumps too large to slip across the gut lining. Instead of being absorbed into your bloodstream, the bound particles continue through the digestive tract and leave in stool. It is a plausible and genuinely clever mechanism, which is exactly why it deserves an honest look rather than a reflexive dismissal.
What the research actually found
The evidence for Qi601 and similar postbiotics comes in three tiers, and it is important to see which tier each claim sits in:
- Lab models of the human gut lining. The supplement bound plastic particles and reduced how many crossed the simulated barrier. Strongest, cleanest data, but a model is not a person.
- Animal studies. In mice, related plastic-binding bacteria increased the amount of plastic excreted in faeces relative to controls. Encouraging directionally.
- A small human test. Participants chewed gum, a well-documented microplastic source, and the supplement was shown to bind plastic particles in the mouth. This is the first human data, and it measured binding, not health outcomes or body burden.
Notice the gap between that and the implied promise. Every result above is about intercepting plastic on its way in. None of them measured whether a person's stored microplastic load went down.
The distinction that matters most: blocking vs clearing
This is where most coverage gets sloppy. There are two completely different claims:

Supplements in this category are, at best, doing the first thing. The marketing (and a lot of the resulting search interest) implies the second. Microplastics found in arterial plaque or brain tissue got there through the bloodstream; a binder sitting in your intestine has no mechanism to reach them.
The open questions before this is worth your money
- Dose and duration. Nobody has established how much, how often, or for how long.
- Selectivity. A surface that binds plastic may also bind minerals, nutrients, or medications. Long-term nutrient effects are unstudied.
- Real-world magnitude. Binding some particles from chewing gum in the mouth is a long way from a meaningful reduction across a normal diet.
- Independent replication. Much of the visible research is early and closely tied to product development. Independent trials matter.
- Regulation. Supplements are not approved for efficacy. “Clinically studied” on a label can mean a single small study.
What to do instead (the part with actual evidence)
If your goal is less plastic in your body, the boring interventions beat the exciting ones by a wide margin, because they act on the dose you take in every day rather than trying to reverse what's already absorbed:

- Cut bottled water, which averages far more particles per litre than filtered tap.
- Switch storage to glass or steel, especially for hot, fatty, or acidic food.
- Skip the gum. It's a surprisingly large and completely avoidable source.
