We make one of these apps, so read this accordingly — and then check the tables, because they contain rows we lose. Every claim about another app comes from that company's own public materials, with a link and a date.

The short answer

If you want one app to judge food quality generally, use Yuka or Olive. They have far larger barcode databases than we do and they score things we do not score at all. Neither publishes a term for the packaging, the polymer or the temperature — so the same yogurt in a glass jar and a plastic pot gets the same number.

That gap is the entire reason this app exists. If plastics are the thing you are trying to reduce, you need a model with the container in it.

Which app is best for checking microplastics?

It depends what else you want from it. Yuka and Olive are broader products with much larger barcode databases, scoring food quality overall with contaminants as flags alongside. Neither publishes a term for packaging or use conditions. If plastics specifically are what you are reducing, a model that scores the container, the polymer and the heat is answering the question you actually asked — and the honest move is to use both kinds of app for the things each is good at.

Does Olive detect microplastics?

Yes. Olive's public materials list microplastics among the contaminants it flags, alongside PFAS and heavy metals, inside a broader 0–100 food score that also covers additives, seed oils, processed sugar and processing level. Olive also commissions its own heavy-metal lab testing across roughly 400 products, which is real primary data and more than we do. What their published materials do not describe is scoring the packaging format or the conditions of use.

Does Yuka check for microplastics?

Not in its published scoring model. The Yuka food score is 60% nutritional quality, 30% additives and 10% organic status — there is no term for the container, the polymer or the temperature. That is a scope decision rather than an oversight, and it means the same product in glass and in plastic receives an identical score.

Are these comparisons fair, given you make one of the apps?

Judge them by whether we lose rows, because we do — several to Olive on database size, lab testing and breadth, and several to Yuka on coverage and cosmetics. Every claim about another app is sourced to that company's own public materials with a link and a verification date, and negative claims are phrased as the absence of a public claim rather than as a statement about their product. If we have something wrong, tell us and we will correct it in public.
