Does almond milk contain microplastics?
No study has measured microplastics in a specific almond milk brand, so anyone quoting you a per-glass number is guessing. What we can reason from is the same thing that drives the answer for every packaged drink: the container, and any plastic the liquid touches on the way into it. The 2024 PNAS study that found roughly 240,000 particles per litre in bottled water pinned the blame squarely on plastic packaging, and almond milk lives or dies by exactly the same variable.
Almond milk does start with one genuine advantage over cow's milk. A large share of microplastics are lipophilic, meaning they preferentially associate with fat. Whole dairy carries a meaningful fat load; most almond milk is low-fat and water-based. That doesn't make it plastic-free, but it removes one of the mechanisms that raises the dairy baseline.
Carton vs jug: the split that matters
Walk the almond milk aisle and you'll see two very different packages, and they are not equivalent for microplastics:
- Aseptic cartons (Tetra Pak style). The shelf-stable almond milk in the center aisle, most Almond Breeze, many store brands, is layered paperboard with a thin polymer and aluminum liner. There is a plastic contact layer and a plastic cap, but no PET bottle and no jug. This is the lower-exposure format.

- Make it at home and store it in glass. Blended almonds and water is cheap, and glass storage removes the packaging variable entirely. This is the lowest-exposure option by a wide margin.
- Choose the carton over the jug. When buying packaged, a shelf-stable aseptic carton beats a refrigerated plastic jug for the same product.
- Don't heat it in the container. Warming almond milk for coffee or cooking? Pour it into a pan or a glass vessel first. Heat plus plastic is the accelerant.
