The rule as Rubbermaid actually writes it
Most coverage of this question stops at “yes, Rubbermaid is microwave safe.” That is true and it is not the useful part. The useful part is the definition sitting underneath it, quoted from the Brilliance use-and-care sheet:
“Made of microwave safe materials that can be used to reheat precooked foods to the proper recommended temperature. These containers are not intended for cooking… Reheating implies the maximum short term service temperature of a Rubbermaid container is 165°F followed by a cool down period. Maintaining temperatures at 165°F or higher for more than 30 seconds is considered cooking, and is outside the intended use of these products.”
Read that against what you actually do. A bowl of leftovers on high for two minutes, until it steams, comes out well above 165°F and stays there for minutes rather than seconds. That is not a borderline case — by the manufacturer's own definition it is cooking, and it is outside what the container is designed for.

The Brilliance figure is the one worth remembering, because it inverts the usual assumption. Tritan is what makes Brilliance crystal clear and stain-resistant, and it is also what caps it at 165°F. If you own both lines and reheat in whichever is nearest, the more expensive one is the wrong default.
Two warnings in the small print that matter more than the timer
Fat, sugar, oil and salt. Rubbermaid explicitly says not to reheat food high in any of them, because butter, chocolate, syrup and jelly “could lead to severe damage and potentially melt the container.” This is the third manufacturer we have quoted saying a version of the same thing — SC Johnson flags it for Ziploc bags too. Fat and sugar reach far higher temperatures than water does in a microwave, so the meal can feel merely hot while the container is already past its limit. Contents matter more than the timer.
Take the lid off afterwards. Rubbermaid asks you to remove the lid after microwaving and let it cool, specifically to protect the wiper seal. A degraded seal is not just a leaking lunchbox — physical wear is one of the main drivers of particle shedding from any plastic.
What the rating does not cover
“Microwave safe” is a real standard and we are not waving it away. It is worth being precise about what it tests: whether the container physically survives the heat, and whether regulated chemicals migrate into food above set limits.
It does not assess microplastic particle release. No regulator anywhere currently sets a particle limit for food-contact plastics, so no manufacturer tests against one. And on that separate question the evidence is consistent: heat is the single largest driver of particle shedding from any polymer.
So the honest position is the same one we reached for Ziploc bags and Solo cups: this use is approved on the axis regulators measure, and it is the worst case on the axis they do not. A ceramic bowl costs nothing and settles both.
