The bottle is the variable, not the water
In 2024, researchers using stimulated Raman scattering microscopy published a count of plastic particles in popular bottled waters and found on the order of 240,000 detectable particles per litre, roughly ninety percent of them nanoplastics small enough that earlier detection methods had missed them completely. The important detail for this article is what the study was measuring: PET bottles, and the particles were overwhelmingly consistent with the bottle and its cap rather than with the source water.
Alkaline water differs from ordinary bottled water in exactly one way that is visible on the label, its pH and mineral profile, which is achieved either by electrolysis or by adding trace minerals such as potassium bicarbonate and magnesium. Neither process touches the container. A bottle of pH 9.5 water and a bottle of pH 7 water from the same plant, in the same PET, stored in the same warehouse, have the same packaging exposure.
There is a common counter-argument worth addressing: does higher pH make the water more or less aggressive towards the plastic? In practice, no, not at these values. Drinking-water pH ranges are far too mild to meaningfully attack PET, and the dominant drivers of release from bottles in the literature are heat, time, UV exposure and mechanical stress. Those apply identically regardless of pH.
Why the category is slightly worse than average
Two habits specific to how alkaline water is sold and used push it marginally down the list rather than up:
- Large resealable bottles. Alkaline brands lean heavily on 1L and 1.5L formats aimed at daily sipping. A bottle that is opened and resealed a dozen times over two days accumulates far more mechanical stress at the neck and more total contact time than a single-serve bottle drunk immediately. Mechanical stress is an established contributor to particle release.

Notice that price and pH both fail to predict the ranking. The two best options are a paper carton and a tap filter, and the most expensive electrolysed 9.5 pH water in a big plastic bottle sits near the bottom. That is the central finding: in this category the premium buys you mineral chemistry, and mineral chemistry is not what the research is about.
A note on the health claims themselves
This site is about plastics, not pH, but it would be incomplete not to say it plainly: the health case for alkaline water is weak. Blood pH is tightly regulated within about 7.35 to 7.45 by the kidneys and respiratory system, and drinking a litre of pH 9.5 water does not move it, which is fortunate, because if it did that would be a medical emergency rather than a wellness benefit. Stomach acid sits around pH 1.5 to 3.5 and neutralises alkaline water on arrival.
That matters here for one practical reason. If you are buying alkaline water primarily for health optimisation, you are paying a premium for an unproven benefit while accepting the same packaging exposure as the cheapest bottled water on the shelf. Switching to filtered tap water in glass or steel improves the measurable variable and removes the cost at the same time.
What to do instead

- If you want the minerals, add them. Trace-mineral or electrolyte drops cost a few pence per litre and let you use your own container.
