Does Essentia water contain microplastics?

The brand-specific answer is unknown. We did not find Essentia named in the 2018 eleven-brand study that tested Evian, Aquafina, Dasani and other bottled waters. We also found no Essentia report using microscopy, Raman, FTIR or another polymer-identification method to count particles in the finished bottle.

Generic bottled-water evidence makes plastic contact plausible, because studies repeatedly find PET, polypropylene and other particles associated with bottles, caps and filling systems. But plausibility is not a brand measurement. Assigning Essentia the 2018 all-brand average or the 2024 PNAS average would manufacture precision the sources do not provide.

How is Essentia water made?

Essentia says it begins with local municipal water. Its 2023 quality report describes three purification stages: physical micron filtration, activated-carbon filtration and reverse osmosis. The purified water is then given trace electrolytes—potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium— for taste before the proprietary ionization step.

That process is more specific than simply saying “alkaline water.” It also shows why source-water comparisons can be misleading: Essentia is sold as purified water with minerals added, not as one spring shipped unchanged from a single geological source.

Does reverse osmosis remove microplastics from Essentia?

Reverse osmosis and prefiltration can remove particles from feed water, but a treatment train is not the same thing as a final-package test. After treatment, water still moves through equipment, receives minerals, is ionized, filled, capped, transported and stored. Each stage is part of the evidence chain needed for a sealed-bottle answer.

The 2024 PNAS bottled-water study is an important caution against simple “RO means particle-free” claims. Its authors detected several polymers in three unnamed bottled-water brands and discussed plastic associated with packaging and filtration materials. Because the brands were not disclosed, that finding cannot be attributed to Essentia specifically.

What does Essentia's quality report test?

The public report provides useful compliance data. It covers physical qualities, disinfection byproducts, radiologicals, inorganic chemicals and organic chemicals, and explains that reported levels represent samples from Essentia bottling locations. It lists pH 9.8 and total dissolved solids of 58.3 mg/L among its representative results.

We found no row for microplastics or nanoplastics, no lower particle-size cutoff and no spectroscopy method in that report. “Not listed” is not the same as “not detected.” A contaminant can only receive an ND result after the document identifies a method and detection limit for it.

What is an Essentia bottle made from?

Essentia's FAQ explicitly says the 1.5-litre bottle is PET-1 plastic and is BPA- and phthalate-free. PET normally does not use BPA in the way polycarbonate does, but the package is still a polyester plastic. The cap and label may be different polymers and should not be silently treated as PET.

We are careful not to turn the 1.5-litre disclosure into an unsupported specification for every historical size and supplier. Check the resin mark and current package in your hand. Product and packaging data can change faster than a general brand FAQ.

Does alkaline pH change microplastic shedding?

No Essentia-specific controlled study located in this review isolates pH while holding bottle resin, thickness, cap, filling line, storage time and temperature constant. Without that comparison, claiming the pH prevents or causes a particular particle count is speculation.

Research on bottled mineral waters has explored relationships among pH, bottle density and measured particles, but methods and packages differ.   2. Keep occasional use in proportion. One travel bottle is different from making PET-bottled water the household default.

  4. Remineralize for taste if desired. Alkaline preference does not require shipping daily water in single-use PET.
