Read that table and the popular framing inverts. People buy a steel Owala specifically to get away from plastic, then drink through a plastic spout attached to a plastic mechanism forty times a day. What actually changes your exposure

  • Hand-wash the lid, even if you dishwasher the body. A dishwasher applies heat, moisture and mechanical stress at once, and the lid is the assembly with the moving plastic parts. The steel body does not care either way.
  • Replace the lid, not the bottle. Owala sells replacement lids. When the seal stiffens or the flip loosens, the mechanism is worn — and worn plastic is shedding plastic. This is far cheaper than replacing a bottle you did not need to replace.
  • Do not put hot liquid through the spout. Heat is the single biggest driver of release in polypropylene, and the flip mechanism is the PP part. Coffee belongs in something without a plastic drink-through.
