Why does this happen?

Micro-cracks and scratches massively increase effective surface area. Degraded surfaces have already lost the smooth outer skin of the moulding. Additives leach out over time, leaving the polymer more brittle. Stickiness or chalkiness is visible evidence of chemical breakdown.
