The short answer
The most overlooked component, and the reason a stainless steel bottle is only as clean as its lid. Threads grind against each other at every open and close, generating particles directly above the contents.
What actually drives release
- Abrasion between cap and neck threads at every use
- Position directly above the contents, so particles fall in
- On travel mugs, the lid sits in the hot vapour path
When it gets worse
- Opened and closed many times a day, as with a daily bottle
- Fitted to a hot drink, so the lid is heated
- Visibly worn, chalky or scratched
