The short answer
A single-use PET bottle is engineered for exactly one cold fill. Refilling it repeatedly subjects a thin, unstabilised wall to washing, scratching, squeezing and cap abrasion it was never designed for — and each cycle raises what comes off the surface.
Why it happens
- Mechanical stress from squeezing and repeated cap threading is a documented driver of release
- Washing, especially hot or with a brush, abrades the interior surface
- PET has no stabilisers for repeated use, unlike a purpose-built reusable bottle
