The only framework you need
Back-to-school guides tend to list every plastic object a child might encounter and imply they all count equally. They do not, and treating them equally is how parents end up spending money on the wrong things while feeling worse about all of it.
Three factors decide whether a plastic item actually transfers particles into your child:
- Contact medium. Plastic touching hot, oily, or acidic food transfers vastly more than plastic touching dry hands. Fat and acid are solvents; skin is not.
- Heat. Warmth is the biggest single multiplier for both particle shedding and chemical migration. A container of hot pasta and a container of dry crackers are not the same product.
- Duration and repetition. Contact measured in hours, repeated roughly 180 days a year for a decade, compounds. Contact measured in seconds does not.

The water bottle is the whole ballgame
If you change one thing, change this. A school water bottle is filled and emptied several times a day, sits in a warm classroom or a hot car, gets dropped, gets scratched, and gets used roughly 180 days a year. Every one of those conditions increases release from plastic. Scratches matter more than most parents realise, because abrasion creates the fresh, roughened surface that sheds most readily, and children's bottles take a beating.

Lunch containers: where the food actually sits
The container is second only to the bottle, and for the same reasons with one addition: food is not water. Warm leftovers, tomato-based pasta, cheese, and oily dressings all pull far more out of plastic than plain liquid does, because fat and acid extract additives that water leaves alone.
The realistic advice is not “replace everything.” It is: retire any plastic container that is visibly scratched, cloudy, warped, or stained, because those are the ones actively shedding, and never reheat in the container it travelled in. Uniforms and PE kit: a laundry problem, not a wearing problem
School uniforms are mostly polyester or poly-cotton, and polyester is plastic. That sounds alarming until you look at where the fibres actually go. Synthetic garments shed the large majority of their microfibres during washing, where they leave with the wastewater, rather than onto or into the child wearing them. Glitter is the one small thing worth refusing
Conventional craft glitter is not a product that releases microplastics. It is manufactured microplastic: tiny fragments of aluminised polyester, deliberately cut to a size that sticks to skin, disperses into air, transfers to food, and washes into drains. The European Union restricted the sale of loose non-biodegradable plastic glitter in October 2023 under its microplastics regulation for precisely this reason.
Biodegradable, mineral, and cellulose-based glitters exist and behave differently. What about the classroom itself?
Carpet, seating, laminated surfaces, whiteboard markers, and craft materials are all plastic-containing, and you control exactly none of them. This is genuinely fine. Indoor dust is a real and well-documented exposure route, but it is a property of essentially every indoor space, it is not specific to schools, and no realistic parental action changes it. Spending worry there produces nothing.

- Retire the scratched containers you already own. Free, and higher impact than most purchases.
- Send lunch cold, or reheat on a plate. Never microwave the travel container.
- Keep the bottle out of the car. Bring it inside overnight and after sport.
- Hand-wash the good containers. Dishwasher heat and detergent accelerate surface degradation.
- Wash uniforms cool and full. Fewer, cooler, fuller loads shed less.
- Swap loose glitter for a biodegradable version, or skip it.
- Buy the backpack for durability, not material. A bag that lasts three years beats an anxious annual replacement.
