Is Stainless steel plastic?

The short answer

No microplastics at all — steel is a metal and cannot shed a polymer. The catch is the parts around it: a steel bottle is only as clean as its lid, and the lid is almost always plastic.

What Stainless steel actually is

An iron-chromium alloy, food-grade in the 304 (18/8) and 316 grades. It is inert to fat, acid and heat, it does not craze or scratch into a shedding surface, and it lasts decades. For anything that holds food or drink it is one of the two materials with essentially no case to answer.

Why Stainless steel is not a microplastic source

Nothing, from the steel. Every score we give a steel product comes from its non-steel components — the lid, the gasket, the straw, the sealing ring. That is why the Stanley Quencher and the Stanley Classic thermos score differently despite both being steel: one has a lid assembly with a straw in the drink and one has a stopper. When you buy steel, buy the simplest lid.

    Limitation: The glass result is the one people skip. Glass was not zero — particles came from the cap and the filling line, not the bottle wall. Small sample per format.

  2. Sobhani 2020Simply tearing, cutting or twisting open plastic packaging generates microplastics at the opening — 10–30 nanograms per 300 cm of tear.

    Limitation: Mass, not particle count, and it does not follow whether those particles land in the food. It is the reason cap and seal design belongs in an exposure score at all.

"18/8", "304" or "316" stamped on the base. Magnetic behaviour varies by grade and tells you nothing useful about food safety. Check the lid separately — that is where the polymer is.
