Is HDPE plastic?
The short answer
Yes, HDPE is a plastic — the rigid, opaque grade of polyethylene, resin code 2. It is chemically stable and free of PET's antimony catalyst, but it is soft enough to scratch and is usually used for multi-day formats.

What HDPE actually is
High-density polyethylene: same polymer backbone as LDPE, packed more tightly, so it holds a rigid shape. It is the default for milk jugs, detergent bottles and shampoo bottles, and it is widely regarded as one of the lower-concern food plastics — a reputation that rests mostly on it not being PET, PVC or polystyrene.

What HDPE releases, and when
Softer than PET, so it accumulates surface scratches from handling, pouring and washing — and a scratched polymer surface sheds more than a smooth one. Cutting boards made from the polyethylene grades produced the highest particle estimate in the cutting-board study, around 79.4 million particles per person per year. The multi-day jug format also means long contact times at pantry rather than fridge temperature.

Stainless steel
No microplastics at all — steel is a metal and cannot shed a polymer. The catch is the parts around it: a steel bottle is only as clean as its lid, and the lid is almost always plastic.
Paper and paperboard
Uncoated paper sheds no polymer. The problem is that most paper that touches food is not uncoated — cups, cartons and many takeaway boxes carry a polyethylene or PLA lining you cannot see.

Yadav 2023 — Chopping on a plastic board generated an estimated 14.5–71.9 million polypropylene microplastics per person per year, and around 79.4 million from a polyethylene board.
Limitation: Controlled chopping by a set protocol, extrapolated to annual figures. Real kitchens vary enormously in board use, knife type and replacement frequency.
Zangmeister 2022 (NIST) — Nylon bags, LDPE food-storage bags and similar single-use plastics shed trillions of sub-100 nm particles per litre in ordinary contact with water.
Limitation: Deionised water at controlled temperature. Nanoparticle counts are inherently large numbers; the study is about their existence and quantity, not their fate in the body.
Earth Action 2026 — Estimated roughly 1,000 tonnes of microplastics migrate from packaging into food and drink annually — about 130 mg per person per year — with PET bottles responsible for around a third, and found UV exposure can raise release up to 100×.
