Is Aluminium plastic?
The short answer
The metal sheds nothing. Almost every aluminium food container has a thin polymer or lacquer liner between the metal and the contents, though — so a can removes the bottle-wall problem and replaces it with a much smaller liner question.

What Aluminium actually is
A light, fully opaque metal used for cans, capsules, foil and tins. Aluminium reacts with acidic and salty food, which is exactly why lined cans exist: the liner is there to protect the food from the metal and the metal from the food. Bare foil has no liner, which is a meaningful difference from a can.

Why Aluminium is not a microplastic source
Nothing from the aluminium; the open question is always the liner, and liner composition is proprietary and rarely disclosed. Most published work on can liners concerns bisphenols rather than particles. Practically, the trade is a good one: swapping a PET bottle for a can removes a full polymer wall and leaves a coating measured in microns.

Stainless steel
No microplastics at all — steel is a metal and cannot shed a polymer. The catch is the parts around it: a steel bottle is only as clean as its lid, and the lid is almost always plastic.

Aluminium cannot shed microplastics, which removes the bottle problem entirely. The trade is a thin internal polymer liner, so a can swaps a particle question for a bisphenol question rather than eliminating both.
Metal tin
One of the two best formats for anything fatty. Fully opaque so it blocks the light that degrades oils, and it has only a thin internal coating rather than a polymer wall.

Earth Action 2026 — Estimated roughly 1,000 tonnes of microplastics migrate from packaging into food and drink annually — about 130 mg per person per year — with PET bottles responsible for around a third, and found UV exposure can raise release up to 100×.
Limitation: An industry-funded modelling exercise, not a laboratory study, and not peer-reviewed. We use it for the relative ranking of formats rather than for any absolute number.
Schymanski 2018 — Compared formats head to head: single-use PET averaged 14 particles/L, returnable PET 118/L, glass bottles 50/L and beverage cartons 11/L.
Limitation: The glass result is the one people skip. Glass was not zero — particles came from the cap and the filling line, not the bottle wall. Small sample per format.
US FDA — States that current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that the levels of microplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health, while listing detection and characterisation as a research priority.
Limitation: A statement about the state of evidence, not a finding of safety. "Not demonstrated to be harmful" and "demonstrated to be harmless" are different claims, and the agency is explicit that the research is ongoing.
