Yes. Polyethylene is the most-produced plastic on earth and the polymer most often detected in human tissue — it was the plastic found in 58.4% of carotid plaques in the 2024 NEJM study.

What Polyethylene actually is
The simplest carbon-chain polymer there is. It comes in density grades — HDPE for rigid jugs, LDPE for films and squeeze bottles — and as a thin lining inside things that look like paper. It is soft, which means it scratches, and it is lipophilic, which means fat pulls things out of it.

What Polyethylene releases, and when
NIST measured LDPE food-storage bags releasing trillions of sub-100 nm particles per litre into water during ordinary use. Separately, the polyethylene lining of a disposable paper cup released around 25,000 particles into 100 mL of hot water within fifteen minutes. It is also the polymer most frequently identified in human tissue studies, which is a statement about how much of it exists rather than about any one product.

Stainless steel
No microplastics at all — steel is a metal and cannot shed a polymer. The catch is the parts around it: a steel bottle is only as clean as its lid, and the lid is almost always plastic.
Paper and paperboard
Uncoated paper sheds no polymer. The problem is that most paper that touches food is not uncoated — cups, cartons and many takeaway boxes carry a polyethylene or PLA lining you cannot see.

Packaging formats made of it
Plastic film and cling wrap
The highest surface-area-per-gram contact in a kitchen. Film is pressed directly against food, often fatty food, for the entire storage period, and PVC film brings plasticiser questions on top.
Coated paper cup
A paper cup is a plastic cup with a paper exterior. Research measured particle release from the polymer lining into hot liquid within about fifteen minutes, which is roughly how long a takeaway coffee lasts.
Tetra-style carton
A genuine middle ground. Mostly paperboard by weight with a thin inner polyethylene layer that does contact the food, but no bottle wall to shed and full light protection.
HDPE bottle or jug
More chemically stable than PET and it does not carry PET’s antimony catalyst, but polyethylene is the exact polymer the EU microbead restriction names, and opaque jugs are usually large formats opened repeatedly over days.

Zangmeister 2022 (NIST) — Nylon bags, LDPE food-storage bags and similar single-use plastics shed trillions of sub-100 nm particles per litre in ordinary contact with water.
Limitation: Deionised water at controlled temperature. Nanoparticle counts are inherently large numbers; the study is about their existence and quantity, not their fate in the body.
Ranjan 2021 — A disposable paper cup released roughly 25,000 micron-sized particles into 100 mL of hot water within 15 minutes — about the life of a takeaway coffee.
Limitation: Hot deionised water rather than coffee or tea, and a single cup type. It shows the polyethylene lining degrades at drinking temperature; it does not quantify a dose from a real latte.
NEJM 2024 (Marfella) — Polyethylene was detected in 58.4% of excised carotid plaques; those patients had a 4.53× higher rate of heart attack, stroke or death over 34 months.
Limitation: Observational, in patients already undergoing surgery for carotid disease. It shows an association, not that microplastics caused the events, and it cannot be traced back to any particular product.
Yadav 2023 — Chopping on a plastic board generated an estimated 14.5–71.9 million polypropylene microplastics per person per year, and around 79.4 million from a polyethylene board.
Limitation: Controlled chopping by a set protocol, extrapolated to annual figures. Real kitchens vary enormously in board use, knife type and replacement frequency.
