What LDPE actually is

Low-density polyethylene has a branched molecular structure that stops the chains packing tightly, which is what makes it floppy and transparent. Everything it is used for involves pressing it directly against food: bags, wraps, bread liners, squeeze bottles. Contact area, not toxicity, is what puts it high on this list.

    Limitation: Deionised water at controlled temperature. Nanoparticle counts are inherently large numbers; the study is about their existence and quantity, not their fate in the body.

What should I use instead of LDPE?

Glass, Stainless steel, Beeswax wrap. No polymer touches the contents, which makes glass the cleanest widely available food material. Worth knowing: glass bottles measured around 50 particles per litre in the one study that compared formats — from the cap and the filling line, not the glass.

How do I know if something is made of LDPE?

A 4 in the triangle, though bags often carry no marking at all. Stretches and stays stretched rather than snapping back. Slightly translucent and waxy to the touch. Anything you can crumple silently is LDPE; a loud crinkle is usually a laminate.
