Is LDPE plastic?

Yes — LDPE is the soft, flexible grade of polyethylene, resin code 4, and it is the material of films, bags and squeeze bottles. It has the highest food-contact surface area per gram of anything in a kitchen.

What LDPE actually is
Low-density polyethylene has a branched molecular structure that stops the chains packing tightly, which is what makes it floppy and transparent. Everything it is used for involves pressing it directly against food: bags, wraps, bread liners, squeeze bottles. Contact area, not toxicity, is what puts it high on this list.

What LDPE releases, and when
LDPE food-storage bags were among the specific products NIST measured releasing trillions of sub-100 nm particles per litre into water during normal use. The format compounds it: a bag touches the entire surface of what is inside it, the zip is abraded at every open, and the most common contents are fatty — cheese, cooked meat, butter — which is the condition that pulls lipophilic additives out of a polymer.

No polymer. A beeswax wrap is cotton impregnated with beeswax, tree resin and oil — the direct replacement for the one kitchen product with the highest food-contact surface area of all.

Packaging formats made of it
Plastic film and cling wrap
The highest surface-area-per-gram contact in a kitchen. Film is pressed directly against food, often fatty food, for the entire storage period, and PVC film brings plasticiser questions on top.
Plastic squeeze bottle
The one format where you deliberately deform the container every single time you use it. Mechanical stress is an established driver of particle release, and squeeze bottles usually hold fatty or acidic contents for months.

Zangmeister 2022 (NIST) — Nylon bags, LDPE food-storage bags and similar single-use plastics shed trillions of sub-100 nm particles per litre in ordinary contact with water.
Limitation: Deionised water at controlled temperature. Nanoparticle counts are inherently large numbers; the study is about their existence and quantity, not their fate in the body.
Sobhani 2020 — Simply tearing, cutting or twisting open plastic packaging generates microplastics at the opening — 10–30 nanograms per 300 cm of tear.
Limitation: Mass, not particle count, and it does not follow whether those particles land in the food. It is the reason cap and seal design belongs in an exposure score at all.
Earth Action 2026 — Estimated roughly 1,000 tonnes of microplastics migrate from packaging into food and drink annually — about 130 mg per person per year — with PET bottles responsible for around a third, and found UV exposure can raise release up to 100×.
Limitation: An industry-funded modelling exercise, not a laboratory study, and not peer-reviewed. We use it for the relative ranking of formats rather than for any absolute number.
