Is PLA bioplastic plastic?

The short answer
Yes — PLA is a plastic, and "plant-based" and "compostable" are claims about where it came from and where it can go, not about what it does in your cup. It is a polymer and it fragments like one.

What PLA bioplastic actually is
Polylactic acid, polymerised from fermented plant sugars, usually corn. It is the material behind compostable cups, clear deli containers and "eco" cutlery. Its compostability is real and highly conditional: most PLA requires an industrial composter running above 55°C, and it does not meaningfully break down in a home heap, in a landfill or in the sea.

What PLA bioplastic releases, and when
PLA has a low glass-transition temperature — it softens well below boiling, which is why PLA-lined cups deform with hot coffee in a way PE-lined cups do not. Softening at the contact surface is the concern. It is worth being precise about the marketing here: a PLA-lined "compostable" cup is a polymer-lined cup, and the UCLA gum pilot made the analogous point in its own category, finding plant-based gum bases behaved much like synthetic ones.

Uncoated paper sheds no polymer. The problem is that most paper that touches food is not uncoated — cups, cartons and many takeaway boxes carry a polyethylene or PLA lining you cannot see.
Stainless steel
No microplastics at all — steel is a metal and cannot shed a polymer. The catch is the parts around it: a steel bottle is only as clean as its lid, and the lid is almost always plastic.
Glass
No polymer touches the contents, which makes glass the cleanest widely available food material. Worth knowing: glass bottles measured around 50 particles per litre in the one study that compared formats — from the cap and the filling line, not the glass.

Ranjan 2021 — A disposable paper cup released roughly 25,000 micron-sized particles into 100 mL of hot water within 15 minutes — about the life of a takeaway coffee.
Limitation: Hot deionised water rather than coffee or tea, and a single cup type. It shows the polyethylene lining degrades at drinking temperature; it does not quantify a dose from a real latte.
UCLA 2025 (ACS, pilot) — Chewing gum released around 100 microplastic particles per gram into saliva, with some samples reaching 600 per gram — synthetic and "natural" gum bases behaved similarly.
Limitation: A pilot presented at a conference, one participant, ten gum brands, not yet peer-reviewed. We cite it because it is the only direct measurement that exists, and we grade pages that rest on it accordingly.
Earth Action 2026 — Estimated roughly 1,000 tonnes of microplastics migrate from packaging into food and drink annually — about 130 mg per person per year — with PET bottles responsible for around a third, and found UV exposure can raise release up to 100×.
Limitation: An industry-funded modelling exercise, not a laboratory study, and not peer-reviewed. We use it for the relative ranking of formats rather than for any absolute number.
