Why the AeroPress is the hardest case in coffee
We spend a lot of this site telling people that the thing to avoid is hot water sitting in plastic. The AeroPress is a plastic cylinder that you deliberately fill with water just off the boil. By our own rule it should be the villain of the category.
It mostly isn't, and the reason is worth understanding because it applies to every piece of kitchen plastic you own: release scales with time and temperature together, not with contact alone. A Keurig holds water hot inside plastic lines continuously, all day, every day. An AeroPress holds hot water for about a minute and is then rinsed and dried. Those are not the same exposure, even though both are “hot water touching plastic.”
The second reason is the polymer itself. The Original is polypropylene, which is among the more thermally stable food-contact plastics and is what a great deal of hot-fill food packaging already uses. It is a considered choice, not a cost-cut. And it has not been polycarbonate since the early redesign, which is where the persistent BPA rumour originally came from.

Note that on the Clear, the stirrer, scoop and filter cap are polypropylene even though the chamber is Tritan. None of those hold hot water for any length of time, so they matter far less than the chamber, but it is worth knowing the models are not made from a single material.
What AeroPress states, and what nobody has measured
AeroPress is unusually forthcoming by the standards of this industry. It publishes the polymer for each model by name rather than hiding behind “BPA-free,” and it states that all materials are free of BPA and phthalates and approved for food contact in both the US and the EU. Compare that with Technivorm, which confirms its plastics are BPA/BPS/BPF/phthalate-free but never names the polymer at all.
What does not exist is a measurement. No laboratory has published a microplastic particle count for an AeroPress brew. If you find a page quoting one, it is invented. The honest position is that the material and the contact conditions are favourable, and that nobody has actually counted.
The thing everyone misses: the filter
Every AeroPress model uses a paper filter (or an optional metal one). That matters more than the chamber polymer for most people, because a paper filter physically retains a share of particulates on their way into the cup. If you have swapped to a reusable metal disc for flavour reasons, you have given that up. It is a small thing, but it is the one variable under your control that applies to every model equally.
What to actually do
- Keep the Original if you already own one. Short contact, heat-stable polymer, paper filter. This is not a device worth replacing out of anxiety.
- Do not pre-heat it with boiling water and leave it. The exposure is time × temperature. Brew and press; don't let a full chamber stand while you do something else.
- Replace it if it is scratched or clouded. Physical wear matters more than age for any plastic, and an AeroPress gets scrubbed daily.
- Buying new and want it gone entirely? Premium or Steel. Both remove plastic from the water path without leaving the brand or changing your technique.
- Stick with paper filters. Cheap, and it is the one upgrade that applies whatever model you own.
