Is Food-grade silicone plastic?
The short answer
Technically not a plastic in the usual sense — silicone is a siloxane, built on a silicon-oxygen backbone rather than a carbon chain. It is more thermally stable than any common plastic, and it is also far less studied.

What Food-grade silicone actually is
A synthetic elastomer whose backbone alternates silicon and oxygen atoms. That structure is why it tolerates oven temperatures that would destroy polypropylene, and why it is not captured by most microplastic definitions, which specify synthetic carbon-chain polymers. Being outside a definition is not the same as being outside the question.

What Food-grade silicone releases, and when
Essentially unmeasured for particle release, which is the main thing to know about it. The established concern for silicone is siloxane oligomer migration into fatty food, which rises with temperature and with poorly cured product — hence the preference for platinum-cured silicone. A useful field test: pinch and twist a fold; if white shows through, fillers are present and the item is not pure silicone.

No microplastics at all — steel is a metal and cannot shed a polymer. The catch is the parts around it: a steel bottle is only as clean as its lid, and the lid is almost always plastic.
Glass
No polymer touches the contents, which makes glass the cleanest widely available food material. Worth knowing: glass bottles measured around 50 particles per litre in the one study that compared formats — from the cap and the filling line, not the glass.
Ceramic and stoneware
Fired, glazed ceramic sheds no polymer. "Ceramic non-stick" cookware is a different thing — a sol-gel silica coating on metal, which is not PTFE and is also not the same as a stoneware dish.

Li 2020 (Nature Food) — Polypropylene infant bottles prepared to WHO sterilisation guidance released 1.3–16.2 million microplastic particles per litre of formula.
Limitation: Release scaled with water temperature — the highest numbers came from the 70°C step WHO recommends for killing bacteria. The study explicitly did not recommend abandoning that step, and no health outcome was measured.
Hussain 2023 (Nebraska) — Three minutes of microwaving released up to 4.22 million microplastic and 2.11 billion nanoplastic particles per square centimetre of container surface.
Limitation: Polypropylene and polyethylene containers with water and acetic acid, not real food. The headline figure is the worst case in the study, per cm², not per meal.
US FDA — States that current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that the levels of microplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health, while listing detection and characterisation as a research priority.
Limitation: A statement about the state of evidence, not a finding of safety. "Not demonstrated to be harmful" and "demonstrated to be harmless" are different claims, and the agency is explicit that the research is ongoing.

No. Natural rubber is harvested latex from the rubber tree, not a synthetic polymer, so it is not a microplastic source. Synthetic rubber is a different material entirely and is one.
