What Polystyrene actually is

A rigid, glassy polymer, either solid (yogurt pots, cutlery, meat trays) or expanded into foam (cups, clamshells, packing). Its brittleness is the defining property: it does not deform under stress the way polypropylene does, it fractures — and fracture at a food-contact surface is particle generation by definition.

Take-out containers were measured releasing 3–29 particles each, and polystyrene is the material in that group that abrades most readily. Hot food goes in straight from the pan, which is the highest-temperature contact anywhere in the chain, and the food is frequently oily — the condition that matters most for a polymer with fat-soluble additives. What should I use instead of Polystyrene?
