What Polyester actually is

The dominant textile fibre worldwide, chemically identical to bottle PET. Recycled polyester is bottles reprocessed into fibre, which is a landfill story rather than a shedding one — a recycled fibre sheds like a virgin fibre. Fleece, activewear and most affordable bedding are polyester or a polyester blend.

What Polyester releases, and when

Fibre shedding happens through mechanical abrasion — washing, drying, and simply wearing. The resulting microfibres are the most commonly detected microplastic in indoor air and household dust, which makes this an inhalation route rather than an ingestion one. That distinction matters: nearly all of the food-side measurement work does not apply here, and the textile-side work is younger and less settled.

    Limitation: Deionised water at controlled temperature. Nanoparticle counts are inherently large numbers; the study is about their existence and quantity, not their fate in the body.

    Limitation: Post-mortem tissue with no exposure history, and the analytical method has been publicly challenged by other researchers. Treat the direction as informative and the absolute numbers as contested.

    Limitation: Predates the nanoplastic detection methods that changed the particle counts by three orders of magnitude. Its conclusion is about what was measurable in 2019.

What should I use instead of Polyester?

Cotton and linen, Hardwood. No. Cotton and linen are cellulose fibres — they shed fibres, and those fibres are not microplastics. Blends are the trap: a 60/40 cotton-polyester shirt sheds polyester.

How do I know if something is made of Polyester?

The care label — polyester is almost always declared by percentage. Fleece, "moisture-wicking" and "quick-dry" are polyester by definition. Melts rather than chars if singed; natural fibres do the opposite.
