Yes. Acrylic is a hard, glass-clear plastic used for tumblers, drinkware and display pieces that look like glass. It is more brittle than polycarbonate and crazes into fine surface cracks with age and dishwasher use.

What Acrylic actually is

Polymethyl methacrylate — rigid, optically clear and cheap enough to make convincing glass substitutes. In a kitchen it turns up as tumblers, salad bowls, cake domes and outdoor drinkware. Crazing is its characteristic failure: a network of fine cracks that develops from heat cycling and detergent, and that a smooth polymer surface does not have.

What Acrylic releases, and when

The mechanism of concern is crazing: dishwasher heat and detergent produce a visibly cracked surface, and a cracked polymer surface in contact with a drink is a plausible particle source in exactly the way a smooth one is not. This is inference from surface condition, which is why the grade is D. Acrylic should not be used for hot contents at all — it deforms well below boiling.

What should I use instead of Acrylic?

Glass, Stainless steel. No polymer touches the contents, which makes glass the cleanest widely available food material. Worth knowing: glass bottles measured around 50 particles per litre in the one study that compared formats — from the cap and the filling line, not the glass.

How do I know if something is made of Acrylic?

Looks like glass but is noticeably light and warm to the touch. A 7 in the triangle, or no marking. Older pieces show a fine haze of cracks when held to the light — that is crazing.
