Is Polycarbonate plastic?
The short answer
Yes, and it is the material the whole BPA panic was about — polycarbonate is made from bisphenol A. It has largely left consumer drinkware, but it is still in water-cooler bottles, older reusables and some appliance parts.

What Polycarbonate actually is
A tough, glass-clear engineering plastic synthesised from bisphenol A. When the BPA-migration literature landed in the late 2000s, drinkware manufacturers moved to Tritan and similar copolyesters, which is why "BPA-free" became a bottle-marketing phrase. Polycarbonate did not disappear — it moved to formats consumers do not think about, like 5-gallon water bottles and blender bases.

What Polycarbonate releases, and when
Two separate issues that should not be merged. BPA migration from polycarbonate is well studied and increases sharply with heat and with hydrolysis of the polymer surface — that is a chemical question. Particle release from polycarbonate has not been measured at all — that is the question this site is about. An old, cloudy, dishwasher-etched polycarbonate bottle is a concern on both counts and a measurement on neither.

Winkler 2019 — Refilling and mechanically stressing PET bottles measurably increased particle release compared with first use.
Limitation: A laboratory stress protocol rather than observed household reuse. It establishes direction — reuse of single-use PET makes things worse — more firmly than magnitude.
Zangmeister 2022 (NIST) — Nylon bags, LDPE food-storage bags and similar single-use plastics shed trillions of sub-100 nm particles per litre in ordinary contact with water.
Limitation: Deionised water at controlled temperature. Nanoparticle counts are inherently large numbers; the study is about their existence and quantity, not their fate in the body.
US FDA — States that current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that the levels of microplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health, while listing detection and characterisation as a research priority.
Limitation: A statement about the state of evidence, not a finding of safety. "Not demonstrated to be harmful" and "demonstrated to be harmless" are different claims, and the agency is explicit that the research is ongoing.
