Does Chewing gum have microplastics?
The short answer
Yes, and unusually the plastic is the product rather than the packaging. Gum base is synthetic rubber. A 2025 pilot measured around 100 microplastic particles released into saliva per gram of gum, with some samples reaching 600.

The measurement is a pilot study presented at a conference, with one participant and ten brands, and it has not been peer-reviewed. It is the only direct measurement that exists, which is why we cite it and why this page is grade C rather than A. Nobody has replicated it.
